Empowering Sustainability at the Allendale Farm

The Allendale Farm experienced significant energy challenges, including an unreliable power grid and soaring diesel costs. Without an electrical grid connection, the farm’s outdated energy system posed critical issues concerning cheese production.

Cooling issues due to an old generator and inadequate energy infrastructure jeopardised the farm’s operations, necessitating an urgent and effective off-grid energy solution to ensure uninterrupted cheese production and mitigate financial losses.

At the start of the project, Dontuwire collaborated closely with the Allendale Farm to overcome the limitations of the current infrastructure by developing practical solutions in line with the client’s main objectives:

• Reliable Energy Independence: Provide an alternative to the grid, which is unreliable and requires expensive initial infrastructure costs for first-time grid connection.
• Reduction of Operational Costs: Minimise expenses associated with running diesel generators, enhancing overall financial sustainability.
• Optimal Equipment Functionality: Guarantee continuous operation of farm equipment, particularly refrigeration systems crucial for cheese production.
• Design for Future Expansion: Create a scalable and adaptable energy system capable of accommodating future growth and increased energy demands.

Dontuwire created a customised off-grid solution for the Allendale Farm’s energy requirements. Our approach involved integrating advanced technologies to provide a stable and reliable energy supply. We installed three Victron Multiplus II 5kVA inverters, supported by four 9.6kWh Magneto Lithium batteries, to store energy efficiently.

Taking advantage of the farm’s high-wind conditions, we installed a Bornay 5kW wind turbine equipped with sensors and controllers for optimal performance. We also used existing and new Sunny Boy solar inverters to balance wind and solar energy production. Our solution was designed with scalability, enabling future expansion to meet the farm’s increasing energy demands. This comprehensive approach ensures the Allendale Farm can operate continuously while reducing costs and enhancing sustainability.
